XYPEX

Concrete Waterproofing – The Xypex Advantage

Responding to diverse, worldwide need, Xypex has expanded its line from flagship coating to a fully integrated, highly functional family of concrete waterproofing products.

Xypex is Different

The crystalline nature of the Xypex waterproofing system provides many application advantages over traditional barrier products.

  • Xypex does not require a dry surface; in fact, a wet surface is necessary.
  • Does not require dry weather to be applied.
  • Xypex does not require costly surface priming or leveling prior to application.
  • It cannot puncture, tear, or come apart at the seams.
  • It does not require protection during backfilling or during placement of steel, wire mesh or other materials.
  • It can be applied on either side of a concrete surface – the negative or the positive (water pressure) side.
  • Xypex does not require sealing, lapping and finishing of seams at corners, edges or between membranes.
  • It is less costly to apply than most other methods.

The Application Advantages

The Xypex crystalline system for concrete waterproofing is substantially different from traditional barrier products — like membranes and cementitious coatings. Check these differences:

  • The concrete waterproofing system creates a crystalline structure deep within the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete mass to prevent the penetration of water and aggressive chemicals. In contrast, barrier-type products function only at the surface of the concrete.
  • Because it is not dependent on surface adhesion to achieve its cement waterproofing effect, it is resistant to extreme hydrostatic pressure.
  • It will seal static hairline cracks up to 0.4 mm.
  • It is not subject to the deterioration problems encountered by membranes.
  • Xypex is permanent and reactivates whenever water is present.

To meet the challenges of changing construction practices, divergent global environments and specific customer requirements, Xypex has continually developed and expanded its line of products. The Xypex Crystalline Technology remains at the core of this line that has evolved into an integrated system:

More on Xypex Waterproofing Systems

Concrete Waterproofing Coatings:

Recommended for reservoirs, sewage and water treatment plants, underground vaults, secondary containment structures, foundations, tunnels and subway systems, swimming pools, & parking structures. Advantages of Xypex coatings include: resists extreme hydrostatic pressure, becomes an integral part of the substrate, allows concrete to breathe, resistant to aggressive chemicals, non-toxic, does not require dry weather or a dry surface, cannot puncture, tear or come apart at the seams, no costly surface priming or leveling prior to application, does not require sealing, lapping and finishing of seams at corners, edges or between membranes, can be applied to the positive or the negative side of the concrete surface, does not require protection during backfilling or during placement of steel, wire mesh or other materials, less costly to apply than most other methods, and not subject to deterioration.

Concentrate

Xypex Concentrate is the most chemically active product within the Xypex Crystalline Waterproofing System. When mixed with water, this light grey powder is applied as a cementitious slurry coat to above-grade or below-grade concrete, either as a single coat or as the first of a two-coat application. It is also mixed in Dry-Pac form for sealing strips at construction joints, or for the repairing of cracks, faulty construction joints and honeycombs. Xypex prevents the penetration of water and other liquids from any direction by causing a catalytic reaction that produces a non-soluble crystalline formation within the pores and capillary tracts of concrete and cement-based materials.

Modified

Xypex Modified can be applied as a second coat to reinforce Xypex Concentrate, or applied by itself to dampproof the exterior of foundation walls. Applied as a second coat, Xypex Modified chemically reinforces Xypex Concentrate where two coats are required and produces a harder finish. Where dampproofing is required, a single coat of Modified may be used as an alternative to a spray/tar emulsion. Xypex prevents the penetration of water and other liquids from any direction by causing a catalytic reaction that produces a non-soluble crystalline formation within the pores and capillary tracts of concrete and cement-based materials.

Concrete Waterproofing Additives:

Xypex Additive products, added to the concrete at time of batching, are part of the Xypex concrete waterproofing and protection system and represent one of three different ways to install Xypex Crystalline Technology into concrete.

Admix C-Series

All variations of the Admix C-Series contain the same amount of reactive chemicals at their prescribed dosage rates and provide the same waterproofing and durability performance characteristics. Xypex Admix is blended into the concrete mix at the time of batching to waterproof and protect concrete from the start. It outperforms other methods because of its unique ability to become a truly integral part of the concrete matrix. The Admix C-Series has been specially formulated to meet varying project and temperature conditions.

Bio-San C500

Xypex Bio-San C500 is a uniquely designed admixture for integral, long-term protection of concrete in harsh sewage conditions with high levels of H2S that cause microbial induced corrosion. Bio-San C500 combines potent antimicrobial protection along with the unique crystalline technology of the Xypex Admix C-Series. Bio-San contains bio-active mineral solids that become permanently fixed within the cement matrix impairing bio-film formation thus inhibiting the growth of acid causing sewer bacteria such as Thiobacillus due to high concentrations of H2S. The unique crystalline technology creates a permanent structure throughout the pores and capillary tracts providing waterproofing and enhanced chemical protection including acid and sulphate resistance. Bio-San C500 prevents microbial induced corrosion, stops infiltration/exfiltration of water, and provides acid and sulphate resistance, significantly extending the service life of concrete sewage collection systems and waste water infrastructure.

Concrete Waterproofing Dryshake:

Xypex Dryshake products, for horizontal surfaces, are part of the Xypex concrete waterproofing and protection system and represent one of three different ways to install Xypex Crystalline Technology into concrete.

Concentrate DS

Xypex Concentrate DS-1 and DS-2 are Xypex “dryshake” products installed into the horizontal surface of freshly laid concrete. Concentrate DS becomes an integral part of the concrete surface thereby eliminating problems normally associated with coatings (e.g. scaling, dusting, flaking and delamination). The active chemicals react with the moisture of the fresh concrete causing a catalytic reaction which generates a non-soluble crystalline formation within the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete.

Concentrate DS-1 is formulated specifically for waterproofing and to provide protection from aggressive chemicals.

Concentrate DS-2 provides these same properties but additionally enhances the abrasion resistance by incorporating a hardener.
